September, 1977, the world’s most famous Catalan artist, Salvador Dali, in his fantasmagorical villa in Cadaquès.  It is no surprise then that this prince of Surrealism put on a show for the Catalan national holiday wearing a traditionalbaratina headdress. The self-proclaimed anarcho-monarchiste never forgot his scepter-like cane, designed by Fabergé.

Stoic and mysterious nudes, a vast desert, Greek columns, a blue saturated sky… nothing was left out of Paul Delvaux’s painting featured in this 1974 portrait taken in his studio on the outskirts of Brussels. This disciple of surrealism, along with Magritte, remains one of the 20th century’s most illustrious painters.

Sempé for President? It is December, 1961, and this young, 29-year-old cartoonist from Bordeaux has just been awarded “Revelation of the Year” by Paris Match, alongside comedian Delphine Seyrig and author François Billetdoux. The public loves the poetic and whimsical style of this creator, with René Goscinny, of Le Petit Nicolas. It would take more to inflate this man’s ego.

César's most well-known sculptures would either be his compressions of objects, especially cars, or his “fingerprints”, like the monumental Pouce, a smaller version of which is kept in his Montparnasse studio.  However, in 1980, this leader of the “new realists” changed paths by working with two models, Fabienne and Salima Gardel.

Humor, for César, is essential:  it is impossible to understand his work without taking into account the playful, nearly facetious dimension.  In 1973, with his eyes closed, he poses surrounded by self portraits that are neither in bronze, marble or even in plaster, but in bread dough, cooked with the complicity of the baker Lionel Poilâne.

Sharon Tate had enjoyed only minor roles in a few television series, and it was once again a minor role she held in J. Lee Thompson’s Eye of the Devil, a British production filmed in 1965 at the Hautefort castle in Dordogne. But it was she who captured the Match photographer’s attention…

May, 1952. (The “King”) Clark Gable, “The King,” was the essence of masculine sex appeal. The American actor’s popularity remained immense two years after the delayed French release of Gone With the Wind, a release that had been pushed back by the war and the occupation of Paris. Gable’s arrival in France that year was such an event that Paris Match, unable to wait for him to arrive in the capital city, traveled to le Havre to photograph him on the

Bruno Coquatrix, the owner of The Olympia music hall, wasn’t convinced Beatles fans would fill the room for the duration of their gig from January 16 to February 4 1964: the “Fab Four” performed at the show’s end, after Trini Lopez and Sylvie Vartan.

Eddie Barclay, who owns a villa in neighboring Ramatuelle, invited the singer of Ma Gueule, and Charles Aznavour, who just dropped by. The three are seen here looking at concert photos on the living room piano.

Although Françoise Hardy might be lighting his cigar, her submissiveness is only a game. In 1980, each would release a new album. Hardy’s Gin Tonic was light and melancholic. That of Jacques Dutronc, Guerre et Pets, provocative and jaded. As if a declaration, he revisited a song he had written for her eighteen years earlier, Le Temps de l’amour.

While the Almighty might have smoked Cuban cigars, Serge Gainsbourg was a compulsive consumer of Gitane cigarettes: he inhaled between two and five packs a day, apparently without hurting his voice. On April 30, 1982, Gainsbourg is seen here at his home on the rue de Verneuil in Paris, smoking while looking at himself smoking on a small screen similar to those used on Boeing 747 airplanes.

Johnny Hallyday’s role as a hoodlum in John Berry’s 1967 action comedy The Great Chase gave the singer an opportunity to simultaneously enjoy two of his favorite activities: movies and motorcycles. But filming didn’t go so well, giving him mixed feelings about the whole adventure. A reaction that would change several years later when (Claude) Lelouch, (Jean-Luc) Godard, Costa-Gavras or Patrice Leconte would cast him in their movies.
